Prosthetic retention, which is how the prosthesis attaches to the patient's remaining anatomy, may be achieved through the use of skin-safe adhesives, anatomical retention, surgical implants, or a combination of these methods.

- Upper-facial - involves the orbit and cheek
- Partial-facial - refers to any part of the face needing restoration but does not involve the nose or orbit
