Prosthetic Eyes

Ocular Prostheses
An ocular prosthesis is a fairly common type of craniofacial prosthesis that replaces a natural absent eye following an enucleation surgery (removal of the eye globe) or an evisceration surgery (removal of the orbital contents leaving the sclera and muscles intact). If you have undergone an orbital exenteration (removal of the entire contents including muscles) then please refer to Orbital Prosthesis.
Certification
Makers of ocular prosthetics are known as ocularists or anaplastologists.  At the Anaplastology Clinic we are Board Certified Clinical Anaplastologists and hold the title of Certified Clinical Anaplastologists (CCA). As CCA’s we demonstrate healthcare-specific competency and a commitment to consumer safety as health professionals who provide patients with customized prosthetic rehabilitation. CCA’s are recognized by Medicare and other private insurers as providers of a wide variety of Facial and Body prosthetics. The scope of practice for a CCA can be seen here: https://www.bcca-cca.com/scope

Ocular Services
At our clinic we offer a complete ocular service. Custom oculars and scleral shells are all custom made for each patient using a combination of hand painting and custom digital technology. All fitting is done with the modified impression technique using highly accurate medical grade silicone. All polishing is done with the finest medical grade high shine materials under microscope.

In 2020, The Anaplastology Clinic acquired the ocularistry practice, Alamance Eye Prosthetics Inc, from Accredited Ocularist Michael Boyd. Michael retired after 40 years of service to patients in need of ocular prosthetics. Michael was one of the few apprentices many years ago with ocularist Lee Allen, a legend in the field. Michael handpicked Jay to continue serving the patients he has cared for over the years, spending countless hours with them in the final months of his career.
